Marine Corps Sergeant John M. Stryker is a tough guy with an even
tougher job--turn a platoon of raw recruits into a combat-ready
fighting machine. He pushes them mentally and physically to their
limits--with discipline, hard work, and sometimes with his fists--and
they hate him for it, especially Pfc. Conway (John Agar), the son of
Stryker's former CO. Soon Stryker's lessons and their courage are put
to the test in a costly skimish, but the worst is yet to come in one of
World War II's fiercest battles, the taking of Iwo Jima. Actual combat
footage and the famous flag-raising scene on Mt. Suribachi highlight
this gripping human drama of heroism and conquest.

Marine sergeant John Stryker seems a martinet and a bully as he trains
young Marines for combat in the Pacific war. In the end, as survival in
the bloody battle of Iwo Jima depends on the lessons Stryker has
drilled into them, his troops discover why he was so hard on them.

After his wife takes their son and leaves him, Sgt. John Stryker is an
embittered man who takes his misery out on the men under his command.
They're a bunch of green recruits who have a hard time dealing with
Stryker's tough drills and thicker skin. Even his old friends start to
wonder if he's gone from being the epitome of the tough Marine drill
instructor to a man over the edge. Written by Alfred Jingle

In a role that defined John Wayne in the American mythos, the Duke
plays Sgt. John Stryker, a tough-as-nails Marine charged with turning
recruits into fighting men during World War II. Both Stryker's troops
and his peers question his harsh methods, but the resolute Sarg turns a
deaf ear. Director Allan Dwan's Academy Award-nominated war drama is
punctuated with real combat footage, and the flag-raising scene on
Mount Suribachi hypnotizes.

****
When you watch a movie like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Full Metal
Jacket", those movies owe their existance because of this movie. But
even more than that, this film defined John Wayne to the world more
than any western or war movie did before. A very important film to
watch if you love film history, and it's even better because 55 years
in the future, it's still entertaining and doesn't feel very dated.
This is partly do to the fact that they used real war footage for some
of the battle scenes mixed in with shots of the actors running across
the beach.

*****
How well does this portray the way the Armed Forces sees itself? To my
knowledge, the Marine Corps still shows this film to ALL recruits in
boot camp. This movie is hard to the core and good for the Corps. After
watching this movie, you'd follow your sergeant to the Gates of Hell,
too. Boo-ya!
